Le ch\u00e2teau est b\u00e2ti sur trois \u00e9perons de gr\u00e8s et constitue donc en fait trois ch\u00e2teaux s\u00e9par\u00e9s : le Grand Ochsenstein, le Petit Ochsenstein et un troisi\u00e8me \u00e9difice probablement appel\u00e9 ch\u00e2teau de Wachelheim. Les ruines dominent la clairi\u00e8re et la maison foresti\u00e8re du Haberacker. Le site est entour\u00e9 de pentes abruptes, sauf au nord, sur le plateau sommital du Schlossberg, o\u00f9 le terrain est plat. Le ch\u00e2teau d&rsquo;Ochsenstein a probablement \u00e9t\u00e9 construit \u00e0 la fin du XIIe si\u00e8cle. Il s&rsquo;inscrit dans un ensemble de ch\u00e2teaux Vosgiens proches de Saverne d\u00e9fendant le passage de la plaine d&rsquo;Alsace \u00e0 la Lorraine.
